This class is designed for students who are looking to expand their knowledge and skills in portrait drawing while breaking free from the limitations of reference. In addition to a study of structure, we will be pushing past mere accuracy to explore artistic expression and emotional depth. We will be using our various aesthetic tools to direct the art and develop a more confident and imaginative approach to portraiture. Over this 8-week course we will study a higher level of portrait development including gesture, structure, design, and exaggeration.

Format: 4 hour live class with combination of lectures, demos, and feedback. Recordings will be provided within 24 hours of each class.
Materials A combination of traditional and digital tools, demos mainly with pencil and paper. Feedback will be done digitally.

Description
David Malan is an accomplished artist and illustrator with over two decades of professional experience. He has worked with a wide range of clients, including some of the biggest names in the industry such as The Walt Disney Company, Harper Collins, Penguin Random House, the United States Mint, and The NFL. His work is known for its attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of the individual. Born and raised in Utah, David was influenced by the great classical artists of the 19th century and the Golden Age illustrators. He has always been an avid sketchbook artist and continues to use this as a fundamental part of his training. His art is focused on storytelling, depicting the individual and expressing an untold narrative.
