Value is one of the the most important, fundamental building blocks of communicating with painting. Learn how to confidently express your ideas in value and discover the knowledge that goes into making a strong composition. You’ll learn practical methods for quickly improving the design and lighting in your paintings. These skills are applicable to any medium and many other technical skills are built upon this foundation. Learn why 2 value compositions are so important, what “checking your values” even means, what to look for to have “good values”, and a lot more!

Duration: 8 weeks
Date & Time: Every Saturday, starting the 11th of February at 1pm-5pm EST
Skill level: All skill levels welcome
Tiers: Receive feedback and participate or spectate (Spectators will usually have time to ask questions at the end of each class)
Format: 4 hour live class with combination of lectures, demos, and feedback. Recordings will be provided within 24 hours of each class.
Materials: Any digital or traditional mediums. Paintovers will be done digitally.

Curriculum:
Week 1: Intro, the importance of failing, and the artistic map of everything
Week 2: The pyramid of fundamentals, the budget, what is value grouping and why
Week 3: The optical, conceptual, contrast and composing with value
Week 4: Edges, the importance of compression and how it relates to design
Week 5: Painting process walkthrough and expanding the groups to 4 values with color
Week 6: Color, light, materials, and reflections. All painting is reflections!
Week 7: Color and materials continued. The relationship between color and value
Week 8: What is style and how does it relate to the fundamentals? Final demo

Description

Devin is a concept artist, illustrator, and teacher working in the film, TV, and game industries. His clients include Luma Pictures, Bungie, Titmouse, Microsoft, and BUCK. Devin has taught over 200+ private mentorship students over 2 years and has written about the core concepts of painting extensively in his Creative Fundamentals book series as well as the 3D Total Fundamentals series.
