If you’ve taken my visdev fundamentals class you know how I design things, but we didn’t get through a lot of the actual painting.

In this workshop I want to take you through my entire painting process. We’ll start with a solid drawing and take it to finish. From ‘The Emoji Movie’ to all three ‘Spider-Verse’ films, this is the process I’ve used my entire career as a visual development artist.

It’s no secret that painting takes a ton of time. Normal class structure can limit demo time, so this workshop will be spectator only, but I encourage you to ask a ton of questions while I work.

We’ll cover:

  • My Painting Workflow
  • Photoshop Tips and Tricks
  • Organizing Layers
  • Value Grouping
  • Rendering Materials
  • Brushes
  • Basic Lighting

Week 1: Painting a vehicle design

Description

Yuhki Demers is an animation producer, production designer, and artist with over a decade of experience designing for films, television, and games. He learned firsthand what it takes to make cutting-edge animation while working as a visual development artist on both Spider-verse films. Yuhki was integral to creating the look and feel for the final films; along with creating original characters and sets; and hand-animating many of the film’s “burst cards.” He brought that knowledge with him to Netflix, where he production-designed My Dad the Bounty Hunter, a premium animated series.

Credits include: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter, Vivo, and Big Hero 6: The Series.

STUDENT EXPERIENCES

“I’d say my skills have definitely improved since joining this class! I’ve also picked up the habit of tackling the most challenging parts to paint first which is a great practice.

“The most important takeaway from this class would probably be the importance of discipline in growth. It’s putting in the necessary practice and learning the fundamentals first before stylization.

“Overall, the course covered everything really well and Yuhki’s great with answering all the questions we had about the films he worked on, the industry, the actual painting class, and giving out tips and tricks!

“I had such an amazing 4 weeks in this course! I definitely learned a lot and have picked up good habits on painting sets. (I didn’t want it to last. :'<) Yuhki has been such a great teacher and very supportive and inspiring to all of us! I’m also really in awe with the amazing community Underpaint has! everyone’s been friendly and kind and very supportive of each other which is just really uplifting. This has been such a very positive class, and I can’t wait to sign up for the next one.
