Description

“I was fortunate enough to take part in Devin’s mentorship in the past 5 weeks, it was probably one of the most valuable things I’ve done in my journey of bettering my art so far. He focuses heavily on fundamentals and teaches you how to juggle and organize the most important concepts and hierarchies in pictorial design. He was able to break down and communicate complex ideas very clearly; this has led to many “aha!” moments for me. What is also great about this mentorship is the real time dialogues and interactions you get with Devin, which doesn’t typically happen with other online courses. He was patient, approachable and saw things from my perspective and taught me accordingly. I have been extremely satisfied with his teaching. If you’d like to learn the foundational knowledge that will carry the quality of your work, then I wholeheartedly recommend this mentorship. I honestly plan on taking another 5 weeks in the future!”

“I booked 2 sessions with Devin and both were great in shaking me from an art rut. By carefully breaking down the structure by which paintings are created, giving clear examples and elaborating further I was able to see images in a new light. Very informative, would highly recommend.”

“If you are looking to learn how to learn about art, Devin’s mentorship is highly recommended. From the very first lesson I’ve stumbled upon multiple “aha!” moments which might’ve taken me years to figure out on my own. This isn’t to say that he introduces strict rules that might stop you from exploring the endless possibilities of art. Rather, he lays the foundations for you to think more widely about your art, whilst explaining the broader ideas in picture-making to structure your learning. This guy’s also a knowledge machine, so if you want to know or learn something specific, he’s got you covered. Keep in mind that Devin tailor’s all this stuff specifically to your individual needs as an artist.

5 weeks ago, before my first lesson, I was basically driving blind in my art journey. I did study after study, but to what end? Now after my first semester with Devin, I understand the purpose of studies, I know what I need to learn and most importantly I’ve obtained a desire to speak through my art. I can see the long road in front of me…if you want to learn about broader ideas in art and design, and set your course in your future learning, this is your guy.”

Over the past 5 weeks, Devin has realigned the way that I think about art. Coming into this mentorship I had lots of experience taking online classes that covered technique, but never in a one-on-one setting, So I didn’t know what to expect. I was feeling uninspired and stuck because all I would do is studies and master copies without creating my own art. Devin helped teach me technical ways to improve my paintings but also conceptual ideas for approaching paintings starting from a blank canvas. Coming out of this mentorship I feel more motivated than ever to start tackling my own ideas and approaching art as a means of expressing myself instead of a never-ending wall of studying to study. I’d recommend this experience to anyone who wants to improve their technical skills or learn more about the philosophical ideas that empower you to express yourself.

I took Devin’s 5 week mentorship and I found that his style of teaching is one of the best out there. He not only is able to simplify large concepts into simple concepts for his students, but also gives great advice to explain my questions with tons of metaphors until I get it. I always feel heard and supported in our conversations. Devin is great at finding areas of improvement for each student and I never leave class without learning something new and mind-boggling insightful. I’m extremely grateful to work with Devin and plan too take more sessions in the future.

“I took my first mentorship with Devin because I was stuck on a couple oil paintings and felt there was a certain amount of information I was missing out. I really didn’t regret it, Devin gave me info that I hadn’t heard anywhere else before and it gave me a huge boost that clearly took me a step further in my understanding of painting. I was so enthusiastic that I later took on another mentorship with Devin so he could guide me through a 3D software. This is also the strength of Devin, to have skills with lots of different tools that allow him to adapt very precisely to your demand. I can only recommend his lessons and also his books!”

– Mathieu Nozieres (https://www.mathieunozieres.com/)

“I first heard about Devin through his Instagram. I thought to myself, wow, how could someone possibly make daily paintings like that?! When I found out he did mentorships, I jumped at the opportunity to learn. The experience was massively helpful, insightful, and frankly eye-opening. The quality of my work increased dramatically through Devin’s attention, and I felt like I was finally able to turn the corner from “how do I draw this” to “why do I draw this.” Our time together flew by, and I left with a goodie bag of tips and tricks along with months worth of experiments to further my craft. Highly recommended is an understatement.”

The only bad thing about Devin’s mentorship program is once it’s over, you will start googling lawyers in your area to sue anyone who tried to teach you about painting before this mentorship. Coming from a 3d background and working as a 3d artist trying to transition into 2d has been incredibly difficult; finding competent teachers, resources, and time to practice are just a few of the obstacles.

Even with all the information out there I felt as if I was getting 0 traction because I was. Devin is able to take the mountain of complex information that is painting and break it down into easily understandable steps. Whenever I sign up for a mentorship/masterclass/whatever I’m looking for one thing, once I am done with the class will I have the information and thinking skills I need in order to further pursue my learning on the subject by myself. Devin delivers this in spades. Honestly, of all the money I have thrown away over the years, this is the only guy who delivered this to me. So in summation if you are here reading this and are thinking about pulling the trigger, don’t hesitate. It was a wonderful experience and truly without this huge push in the right direction from this man I shudder to think about where I would be headed in art. I already booked another 5 weeks right when it ended. You will have fun, learn a lot, and be better off for it.

“I remember seeing Devin’s art and immediately being captured by his style and artistic abilities. His loose yet very descriptive style was part of what initially made me want to learn from him. With this in mind, I asked him if he would be willing to do a mentorship and he said yes! Devin provided materials and lectures for me to learn from and also gave me some studies to work on to strengthen my foundational skills. In the duration of the mentorship I learned a lot about the importance of having a good foundation and also taking your time and thinking as you work. Devin is a great artist and teacher and I would happily recommend him to anyone.”

“Devin’s Mentorship showed me how to correct many mistakes that were holding me back in painting! I can’t recommend it enough, he’s very approachable and knows how to quickly get to the core of a problem!”

“…I’ve worked with Devin over the last 5 weeks as a part of his mentorship program and have been enormously satisfied with the work I did with Devin as my teacher. His deep understanding of the design process as a concept artist and his knowledge as a student of classical painting makes for a rare hybrid of modern commercial and classical education I’ve not seen elsewhere. Devin is very talented at breaking down complex design ideas, making them easy to understand and integrate into your own workflow. I personally struggled for a long time to juggle the various techniques and skills a concept artist should be versed in and how to refine those skills independently. Working with Devin has helped me understand how all of these different techniques are simply tools to accommodate good design and not the other way around. Once I understood that, my intent and ultimate goals became much clearer and easier to achieve consistently. After working with Devin to build that solid foundation, producing new art is so much easier and my progress as an artist has shot up dramatically…I will be continuing my mentorship with Devin and highly recommend anyone interested in bettering their skills as an artist and as an effective designer to book a session as well.”

“Before Devin’s 5 week mentorship, I was in a frustrating loop of repeating mistakes in my drawings and not being able to put my finger on what exactly was wrong. I was improving as a sculptor while my drawing skills continuously lagged behind.

Devin’s teaching style, while focused broadly on design and fundamentals, felt tailored to my existing knowledge as an artist.

He is a great teacher with encyclopedic art knowledge, always knowing how to break down even the most complex art topics.

The coursework combines modern workflows with more classical emphasis on understanding of light and form in a way that is truly unique.

The two value studies helped me to find the simple statements in my work and make bolder and clearer design choices. Setting up material reference in blender made my fantasy scenes more believable. Painting from life made me more disciplined in drawing in what I was actually seeing, instead of what I knew.

Getting personalized real time feedback made new concepts sink in quickly.

Devin’s guidance has given me the tools to work more consistently and confidently. I saw improvement over the few weeks under his guidance that I never saw in college or through personal practice. I will definitely be doing more sessions with him in the future, and I can’t recommend this course enough!

“The biggest challenge with learning art is that if you’re doing it by yourself it is very difficult to see your own flaws and shortcomings. Devin helped me grasp the fundamental elements of visual language so that my way of processing and understanding my own art changed and I became much more able to understand my own mistakes. His unusual approach to learning by comparing visual art to different media like music and writing also helped me grasp the underlying design principles that serve as foundation for all creative endeavors and helped me become much more aware of how design works. Even though I had some ideas similar to his, during this mentorship over and over again Devin managed to bridge previously disconnected concepts, giving me a moment of revelation every time. I would definitely recommend taking this mentorship if you are interested in understanding visual design in depth and not just learning a workflow, which you could do with most other art learning programs around. Don’t get me wrong, Devin will help you make your pictures prettier, but most importantly, he will help you so that in the long term your understanding of visual language only keeps growing.”

Having the mentorship over the past 5 weeks with Devin has been an absolute pleasure! I didn’t really know what to expect as this was the first time I’ve tried a 1 on 1 mentorship but it thoroughly exceeded my expectations. Devin is a wonderful teacher who took the time to understand where I was coming from and where I would like to be creatively.

Every week he introduced me to new ideas and concepts, and clarified any confusion I may have had, either due to misconceptions or preconceived ideas I had formed in my mind. He has a great understanding of the fundamentals and is able to break down complex ideas into simple explanations. Devin is able to explain things in ways I have not heard before from any other source, and more importantly, it makes sense! He also gave me a tonne of resources to supplement the ideas we talked about and to point me in the right direction on how I can expand my knowledge by myself outside of the mentorship.

In my opinion this mentorship is one of the best investments I have made for my art education! Whether you are a complete beginner or have been pursuing art for many years, I have no doubts that having a mentorship with Devin will leave you with more knowledge then you started out with, a good foundation to start learning on your own and the energy to start creating more!

“…Devin is an excellent teacher who put a lot of time and effort into learning his craft and how to present fundamental concepts of art.

Five weeks do not seem that much time in the long run but even I was surprised by how much progress I made during the course.

This mentorship was excellent in breaking down those barriers that held me back from progressing.

The personal weekly input and paint-overs were essential for me to get my head around important concepts and how to apply them in my personal work. I wholeheartedly recommend it.”

– Levente Hernádi (https://www.artstation.com/zipfelzeus)

I took two five week sessions with Devin, and it was one of the best class experiences I’ve ever had. Before the mentorship, I had done one too many concept art renders and was ready to hang up the towel in regards to painting. However, Devin’s teaching was a breath of fresh air! He explained these core concepts about painting that I had definitely *heard* of before, but the way he explained them was so clear and concise that I finally understood them. With this newfound understanding, I feel like I can finally be able to appreciate painting in a way that is exciting, and have renewed enjoyment in it. I highly recommend Devin’s mentorship to anybody!

I learned so much during the 5-week mentorship with Devin. His amazing ability to break down the complexity of painting into very clear and digestible bits of information makes it very easy to understand and I feel like I finally know what makes a successful painting.
