Multi-Character Illustration with Remi Jacquot

Are you interested not only in designing characters, but also want to integrate them together into complex and believable illustrations? In this new class from Senior Envar Illustrator Rémi Jacquot, you will learn how to break this complex topics down into manageable steps. First, designing individual characters, then learning how to compose and manage them while creating a finished illustration. Students will wind up with both finished character designs and a finished multi-character illustration by the end of the class.

We’ll Cover:

Week 1: Values, shapes, composition
We’ll discuss and practice an efficient way of working with these fundamentals, along with exercises to practice them and what can you learn from them.
Week 2: Character sketches, faces and expressions
We will start working on the characters, including learning how to get a solid drawing that can be rendered further and how to get vibrant expressions and personalities.
Week 3: Character Creation 1
Each student will create an original character based on a theme. They will do research on the silhouette, face, expressions, clothes, objects, personality and then render them full body on a white background.
Week 4: Character Illustration 1
The student will create an illustration featuring the character they previously created. The illustration will serve as a full representation of the character’s story, personality and abilities.
Week 5: Character Creation 2
Same as before but with a new character and a new theme.
Week 6: Character Illustration 2 :
Same as week 4.
Week 7&8: Multiple Characters Illustration
The student will create and research a team or a set of characters that will then be integrated in an illustration featuring them. The students will combine here what they learned in the previous weeks and will learn how to tackle a complex illustration involving multiple characters.

Duration: 8 weeks
Date & Time: Saturdays at 12PM ET starting July 25, 2026
Skill level: All skill levels welcome
Tiers: 12 Critique spots – Receive feedback or spectate without homework feedback
Format: 4-5 hour live class with combination of lectures, demos, and feedback. Recordings will be provided within ~2 days of each class.
Materials: Any digital or traditional mediums. Paintovers will be done digitally.
